New exotic species of turtles caught in the lake in 2012
Since 2010 the lake project is dedicating efforts to reduce the presence of exotic turtles in Lake Banyoles.
Until January 2011 there have been 273 shots of exoticspecies, mainly Florida turtle or redeared (Trachemys scripta elegans), but also caught yellow- earedturtle (Trachemys scripta scripta) turtle painted (Chrysemys picta), false map turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica) and hieroglyphicturtle (Pseudemys concina)
This 2012, to May, have already captured more than 50 exotic turtles. Some new species have been recorded in Lake Banyoles.
The new species were the red belly turtle (Pseydemys nelsoni) and Nicaraguan slider (Trachemys emolli). We have also captured three specimens of tortoise in this case hybrid (T. h. Hermanni X T. h.Boettgeri) of the species native to Catalonia, but that is not in the area of the lake Banyoles, and therefore has also been captured andremoved from the environment.
