(LIFE08 NAT/E/000078)

The main objective of the project is to carry out a widespread intervention to fight, slow down and reverse the decline of species and habitats of community interest being caused by invasive species in the Natura 2000 area “Banyoles Lake”. This is being done by controlling invasive species and strengthening the populations of native species (turtles, barbels and river mussels-nàiades).

Since the 1990s, the EU has subsidised natural resource conservation projects in member states with funds from LIFE, currently LIFE+ 2010-13. Through this the intention is to protect and conserve those Sites of Community Importance (SCI), now known as Special Protection Zones (ZEC), included in Natura 2000.

The Natural Area of the Lake, declared an Area of Natural Interest (PEIN) and which offers one of the most important hydrogeologic ecosystems in the Mediterranean region of the Iberian Peninsula, encompasses the Lake and the set of ponds around it.
The area has been benefitting from the Programme LIFE+ Natura through the project: Improving the Habitats and Species of Banyoles Natura 2000: A Demonstrative Project, for the period 2010-2013.

The project was awarded by the European Community to the Consortion of the Lake, with de town councils of Porqueres and Banyoles as a beneficiary.  Th eproject is partnered by the Generalitat of Catalunya's Department of Environment and Housing (Autonomous government of Catalunya), the Regional Government of Girona, the Water Catalan Agency (ACA) and Aigües de Banyoles (local water company). To oversee the work and development of the project a team of people dedicated tothe project has been created.
